The Lost Chapter of the Kama Sutra
Two-Channel Lenticular Hologram Here are the two constituent images:
REMEMBER THESE THINGS? They were the little novelty postcards, stickers, or magnets that had a kind of textured plastic-y surface. When you tilted them, the image magically changed, shifting from one image to another, creating the illusion of movement. Kids called them "winkies". I remember I got one as a Cracker-Jack prize once. It turns out they are a kind of hologram. The Lost Chapter of the Kama Sutra is a limited edition of ten 8 x 10" lenticular holograms, mounted on acid-free black museum board, signed and numbered. The amount of detail in the finished hologram is incredible, practically indistinguishable from the original paintings. In the black mat and frame, the hologram glows like a radiant green emerald. Also, in response to repeated questions, I want to specify that the "change" in the images takes place by moving from side-to-side in relation to the art, not up-and-down. So when it is hanging on the wall, you won't have to bend at the knees to see the effect! Note that in this piece and in my other lenticular hologram God Save Me from Monsters, neither image is entirely sequentially "first". Some things happen first in "image A" and some things happen first in "image B". I think my real innovation has been to recognize this is the only medium that allows the viewer to go back and forth in time, unlike other temporal media (like film, video, or animation) that go only one way. This allows me to play with sequence in a unique way, and even create paradoxical situations. Look closely at these holograms and you'll see what I mean!
