Bride of Dionysus, 2012.Plexiglas print/ mixed media lightboxedition of three, 30 x 25"price on request This lightbox piece was inspired by the mural in the Villa of the Mysteries in Pompeii, depicting the initiation of a young woman into the cult of Dionysus (a.k.a. Bacchus, the god of wine, theater and sex), circe AD 79. In both pieces, the young initiate is shown being ritually wed to the god, to become a Maenad, or female follower of Dionysus. Maenads were infamous in the ancient world for their orgiastic ceremonies, and could be quite vicious. Orpheus met his end at the hands of Maenads, who tore him to shreds with their bare hands when he stumbled uninvited into the Oracle of Dionysus in Thrace. Here, I essentially re-staged the Villa of Mysteries mural with contemporary models, and added a few touches of my own. One of them, the girl chained to the phallus, I later discovered to have it's counterpart in the ancient mural- go figure! The whole subject is just so fascinating- I love how casually the ancients decorated their homes with pornographic art, depicting all kinds of kinky stuff! The image is silkscreened in translucent colors on the backside of the plexiglas, then lit from behind- in this case, by hanging the framed piece in a window.
